Fingerprint Enrollment Best Practices

This document provides you with practical tips for making biometric enrollment smoother, to ensure that everyone can quickly and easily authenticate into your safes.

Why Enrollment Matters

Accurate fingerprint enrollment ensures faster, smoother access to your Safe—especially critical during emergency patient care. Proper technique drastically reduces authentication errors and delays.

Preparing for Enrollment

Ensuring that people’s hands are ready for good-quality imaging is a great first step. Before starting:

  • Ideal Fingers: Opt for index and middle fingers, primarily. Thumbs and ring fingers are also good, but give the pinky a pass.
  • Clean and Dry: Ensure fingers are clean, dry, and free from any cuts. Not too dry though — a quick breath can add just the right amount of moisture to fingertips.
  • Prep Your Skin: Washing hands with moisturizer soap and/or applying hand lotion can significantly improve the quality of enrollment.

Scanning Fingers

Here’s how to get the perfect scan every time:

1. Positioning: Aim to place the core of your fingerprint (the section where lines curve the most) flat in the center of the scanner(hint: align your top knuckle with the scanner’s bottom edge).

2. No Movement: Once down, don’t move your finger. Ensure it covers the entire sensor for a clear scan.

3. Avoid Extreme Pressure: Pressing too hard can blur the capture—gentle yet firm does the trick.

4. Listen for the “Beep”: The reader will sound a short “beep” when it’s captured a good-quality enrollment. When you hear the beep, you’re ready to move on. No “beep”? Try different positions and pressures until you get a confirmation “beep”.

5. Lift and Repeat: After the beep, lift your finger and place it back on the scanner. Repeat this process until all four templates are captured: the device will prompt you on the screen as you proceed through the scans.

High-quality enrollments dramatically increase the effectiveness of biometric authentication, leading to faster access and higher satisfaction for your users. So, make the most of these tips – and we’re right here to help; reach out to our support team at any time if you have any questions.
