Vehicle Installation Requirements

This guide outlines the key requirements for installing MedixSafe safes in vehicles or fixed locations, including mounting, power, network readiness and site preparation. Review the guide and complete the checklist before installation to help ensure a smooth and efficient process.

Review these requirements before your scheduled installation. Preparing the mounting locations, power connections and network information in advance will help ensure an efficient installation.

1. Select the Mounting Location

The Safe should be installed:

  • Inside the locked vehicle cab
  • Within easy reach of the paramedic, where possible
  • On a secure horizontal shelf or cabinet surface
  • In a location that does not interfere with vehicle controls, equipment or passenger movement
  • With enough clearance to open the safe door fully

All safe doors swing outward with the hinges located on the right - except for the S safe which has double doors with hinges located on the left and right. Check for cabinet lips, equipment or other obstructions that could prevent the door from opening. Spacers may be used where additional clearance is required.

Confirm the Fit

Use the full-size mounting template to confirm the safe’s placement and mounting-hole locations.

Mounting Templates

Print the template at Actual Size or 100% Scale. Before drilling, verify the printed dimensions against the measurements shown on the template, as printer settings may affect the scale.

Different apparatus generations may require different mounting locations. Test the proposed location on each vehicle type and identify any exceptions before installation begins.

2. Prepare the Mounting Surface

The safe must be secured to a solid structural surface using appropriate automotive-grade mounting hardware.

Before installation:

  • Confirm that the mounting surface can support the safe
  • Check below and behind the surface before drilling
  • Ensure wiring, fuel lines and other vehicle components will not be damaged
  • Identify vehicles requiring spacers, brackets or additional reinforcement
  • Remove equipment that may obstruct the installation area

 3. Prepare the Power Connection

Each safe includes a 12VDC power adapter, which can be used when a suitable power outlet is available in the vehicle.

For a permanent hardwired installation, MedixSafe also offers a vehicle hardwire kit, sold separately. The hardwire kit connects the safe directly to the vehicle’s DC power system.

For the best performance, connect the safe to a continuous power source rather than ignition-switched power. Continuous power allows the safe to remain connected and receive user credentials, configuration changes and system updates.

If using the vehicle hardwire kit, the installation must:

  • Follow automotive electrical standards
  • Include appropriate circuit protection
  • Use secure power and ground connections
  • Keep wiring concealed and protected
  • Avoid exposed or loose surface-run wiring

MedixSafe safes use a 2.1 mm x 5.5 mm DC barrel connector.

 4. Confirm Network Readiness

The safe will be connected to the customer’s network during installation. MedixSafe does not preconfigure customer network settings before shipment.

Before installation:

  • Confirm Wi-Fi coverage is available inside the apparatus
  • Have the network name and password available to authorized onsite personnel
  • Ensure IT has reviewed the required network and firewall settings
  • Have an IT contact available during installation, if assistance is required

5. Installation-Site Requirements

The selected installation location should provide:

  • A secure area for receiving and storing the safes
  • Sufficient space for vehicles to enter and exit
  • Adequate lighting and working space
  • Access to vehicle power and fuse panels
  • Wi-Fi connectivity for testing
  • Fleet and IT support, when required
  • A confirmed vehicle schedule
  • A designated onsite contact

Document the proposed mounting location for each apparatus type using photos, measurements, videos or available floor plans before installation. 

6. Recommended Installation Sequence

For larger fleet installations, consider beginning with a small number of vehicles that represent the different apparatus types. This helps confirm mounting locations, power access and installation requirements before continuing with the remaining vehicles.

Once the initial installations have been tested and confirmed, proceed according to the established installation schedule.

Fixed-Location Safes

For safes installed in a building:

  • Confirm whether the safe will be mounted to a wall or floor
  • Ensure the mounting surface is structurally suitable
  • Secure wall-mounted safes to structural studs or a reinforced backer
  • Use Grade 5 mounting hardware or better
  • Provide access to a suitable power source
  • Confirm network availability before installation

Ethernet connectivity is recommended for building installations where available. Review the Network Configuration Guide to confirm that the network meets MedixSafe requirements.
